Thomas Jefferson’s Letter to Roger Weightman
Who is Roger Weightman?
Roger was born in 1787 and died in 1876. He was a politician and business man; starting in the printing business, he later maintained a number of shops. During the time he spent as Mayor of Washington D.C. from 1824 to 1827, he became head of the 1825 committee for the inauguration of John Q. Adams.
Weightman was always at the center of Washington’s social activity. Some of Rogers accomplishments during his busy social life included finding time to:
- Be curator of the Columbia Institute
- Founding member of the Washington National Monument Society
- Freemason
- Librarian of the U.S. Patent Office
- General in the Union Army during the Civil War
How did Jefferson know Weightman?
Thomas Jefferson continued to write all the remainder of his life. And, important to a writer would be one who would operate a printing press. Who better than to pick the one at the center of the social scene than Roger Weightman. Both men were very respected at the time.
The Letter to Roger Weightman
Roger wrote to Jefferson inviting him to the fifty year anniversary of America declaring its Independence. When Jefferson received the invitation, he was ill and just days before his death. So, this letter was the last piece of correspondence from Thomas. Although it was among his final words before his death on July 4, 1826, this letter is the culmination of Jefferson’s work.
Short and sweet, his words speak volumes about how he felt about America and what it stood for, and what others should see her as.
Here are a few select words that sum it all up:
“. . . and to have enjoyed with them the the consolatory fact, that our fellow citizens, after half a century of experience and prosperity, continue to approve the choice we made. May it be to the world, what I believe it will be, (to some parts sooner, to others later, but finally to all,) the signal of arousing men to burst the chains under which monkish ignorance and superstition had persuaded them to bind themselves, and to assume the blessings and security of self-government.
“These are grounds of hope for others. For ourselves, let the annual return of this day forever refresh our recollections of these rights, and an undiminished devotion to them.”
For one to have looked back on his life and career, Thomas Jefferson certainly had pride in his impact for the cause of America.

University of Home: Education Starts Here
The greatest foundation for anyone is that of education. But, for so many they don’t get the proper education they deserve. Why? Because they weren’t taught in the HOME! The home is where it all starts. Education starts here! It isn’t the responsibility of institutions to educate our children.
The video below is from a church address from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. And, while you may agree or disagree with their beliefs, you will probably agree with what G. Homer Durham presents in his address: The Home as an Educational Institution. It is obvious that he received some inspiration. He gave this address in 1979 at a time where there wasn’t such a moral decay as we face today. Prophetic? You be the judge.
Super Bowl Ad Preview
For most people, they only watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. If that’s you, retailers are already rolling out their ads in advance of the big game.
This is just the start of the Super Bowl Ad war between retailers. After the game, come back and share which one was your favorite.
Stacey Dash Fires Back; Paul Ryan Calls Her Brave
The fact that Stacey Dash is taking so much criticism for her tweet is ridiculous. It shows that Obama supporters are seeing Romney and Ryan as a real threat.
While she did vote for Obama in 2008, she says this time around she wants “the next four years to be different.”
She also says, “I chose (Romney), not by the color of his skin but by the content of his character.”
While speaking with Piers Morgan on CNN, Stacey said that Paul Ryan reached out to her saying that she was brave and that both Romney and himself support her.
Dash has advised African-Americans who feel personally obligated to vote for Obama because he is black:
“Do your homework. Look at your country. Think about the next four years of your life. Also, look at Mitt Romney’s track record. As a CEO, he has excelled. As governor of Massachusetts, he did quite well. And listen to what he says – I believe him and I believe he deserves a shot.”
Here is her interview with Morgan on CNN:
Politicizing Comic Book Heroes
DC Comics is at it again. Not too recent were they making headlines because they announced that the Green Lantern was gay. If that wasn’t enough, their newest release for the Green Lantern turns him into a Muslim Arab-American hero.
In a blog post for The Weekly Standard, Jonathan Last had this to say:
At this point, DC is closing in on self-parody. Because the new Muslim hero, “Simon Baz,” is also a Green Lantern, and where other Green Lanterns have worn either a simple Domino mask (or no mask at all), Baz wears a full stocking mask with only his eyes and mouth visible. You can practically hear the corporate notes on the design: We like the super-powered burka look because it’s so evocative of America’s multicultural history.
If we were going to be snarky we might ask what the Muslim Green Lantern thinks of the gay Green Lantern’s right to marry. Or why DC Comics doesn’t have any prominent evangelical Christian heroes. But instead, I’ll just point out that with DC popping out diversity stunts every few months, eventually the law of diminishing returns will set in and they’ll have to create a transgendered Green Lantern with a drinking problem—in a wheelchair!—in order to get people to pay attention.
It definitely leaves you wondering what type of message is being delivered to such young and impressionable minds.
You be the judge. Do you have problems with this?
No Easy Day – Book Review
Yesterday the controversial book “No Easy Day” hit the shelves. I was just as excited to get my hands on a copy as the day I heard that this book was a reality. I will try to keep this review short, so here goes . . .
I was slightly skeptical upon hearing this book would hit shelves that it would actually make it. I was almost certain that the government would push to have it removed. So, when I finally got my hands on a copy I didn’t hesitate. And neither did the author. From page one, you are brought in to the story and left on the edge of your seat when the author takes you back through his career.
Before you know it, you are two-thirds of the way through and find yourself sitting in the briefing room being given enough intel to know that you have been selected to carry out one of the biggest missions that has been handed down from Washington.
The author’s account offers a different view of how things happened during the raid that ultimately ending with the killing of UBL. But, one thing is certain. He gives his account that Bin Laden is in fact dead. If you question that, then read the book. In the end, you will have questions answered. And you will probably be left with some new questions.
What time will tell is if others will come out and finally tell their stories. A gripping, white-knuckle read. I couldn’t put it down. So get out there and grab your own copy or order one by clicking the following link:
